Oh Mandy

When I was in the HoC library yesterday I printed out some emails, and it was only when I got into the Chamber that I realised I'd inadvertently picked up someone else's printing too - some lyrics about Peter Mandelson, set to the tune of Mama Mia. Here's a sample:

"Mandy, Mandy, here we go again/ My, my, look at our poll rating/ Mandy, Mandy, help us win again/My, my, keep the Tories waiting. Polls left us broken-hearted/ blue since the day you parted/ Why, why did we ever let you go?"

Not very good, is it? Trying now to remember who else was in the library at the time...

No, it's terrible. As is relying on Peter Bloody Mandelson to improve your poll rating.

Christ almighty.

Just because someone says something in a silly song, doesn't make it true. He's back in Govt to do a proper job.

Whatever your opinion of Mr Mandelson personally, it is a scandal that someone with his track record in Government is given a seat in the Lords. There are, of course, plenty of undeserving peers from all sides and none (as well as plenty of deserved appointments) but Mr. Mandelson's elevation is particularly galling.
MPs often muse about the cause of the elecorate's general disinterest and mistrust in politics, yet continue to do things like this.

The second time he lost his Cabinet job Channel 4 had a winning caption:

"I'm Mandy, fire me."

Kerry, do you know what a proper job is?

Allowing Mandelson anywhere near our party once again was a disgrace. The guy has no idea how people live, and anyone who thinks sipping drinks with people with links to the Russian mafia is a good thing to do is deeply suspect, to put it mildly.
He is also a close associate of the Royal family and the fox hunting fraternity, indeed it was he who tried at every turn to frustrate the Hunting Act from getting into law.

I don't think you can question his Labour pedigree, Chris.

He has such legitimacy eh Kerry - remind me, who elected him? You bunch of undemocratic b***ards

Come off it, there have always been Ministers in the Lords. Remember Lord Carrington?

I'd rather see a wholly-elected Lords, and voted for the 80% and wholly-elected options, but till then.. the House of Lords is part of the UK legislature and some of its members are part of the executive and that's the way it is.

Turns out Mandelson's "proper job" is to close post offices and sack Royal Mail employees, following the EU's Postal Services directive.

But of course, he could never let on that the orders have come from Brussels, so he's spewing some bullshit about modernisation instead.

Nice to see he hasn't lost his contempt for the electorate's intelligence, eh?

Bringing Mandelson back was a stroke of pure genius! Suddenly politics is interesting again.
One or two people seem a little put out, though. And, if I'm not mistaken, didn't John Major try to part privatise the Post Office?

No indeed. We mustn't question our betters in hereditary Labour, must we? Grandfather's ermine always looks so chic.
